Donald Trump falsely claimed he beat Joe Biden to win the presidency while the knife-edge vote is still too close to call. The Republican incumbent claimed there is a “fraud on the American nation” and said he would go to the Supreme Court to get vote counting stopped, as the nail-biting contest is ongoing. The Democratic challenger, who has long anticipated an attempt by Mr Trump to cast doubt onto the result, earlier said that his campaign was still “on track” for victory as he insisted every vote must be counted.

During ABC News’s live election coverage, Mr Abrams said: “I don’t know exactly what he’s talking about because they already tried to stop certain votes in Pennsylvania from being counted as they come in.

“They’re not going to have any success in stopping the vote-counting right now.

“The only success they may have down the road is in assessing which votes will ultimately end up counted.

“Let’s be clear, votes are still being counted. Stepping in right now and saying, ‘let’s stop counting votes’.

“That’s just not the way the rules work.

“You can’t just say we’re not going to allow the rest of the votes to be counted.

“The question becomes what happens once the counting process has basically ended? There can be recounts, there can be challenges.

“But the notion that somehow the counting is going to stop simply isn’t going to happen.”

But paving the way for a legal battle amid fears of unrest on the streets of America, Mr Trump gave a speech in the White House to say there was a “massive fraud” in the election and accuse a “very sad group of people” of trying to disenfranchise his supporters.

He said: “This is a fraud on the American public, this is an embarrassment to our country.

“We were getting ready to win this election – frankly we did win this election.

“So our goal now is to ensure the integrity for the good of this nation. This is a very big moment.

“We want the law to be used in a proper manner. So we will be going to the US supreme court, we want all voting to stop.”

Prominent Democratic opponents condemned Mr Trump’s claim of victory.

New York representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: “Donald Trump’s premature claims of victory are illegitimate, dangerous, and authoritarian. Count the votes. Respect the results.”

And Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar tweeted: “The irony of worrying about people turning America into Somalia, while allowing Trump to do literally what Somali dictators used to do.

“Wake up, he is destroying everything that sets us apart. We send election observers into other countries, we shouldn’t need ours monitored.”
