Sturgeon to face Ross hours after ‘defining mission’ falls apart

Nicola Sturgeon will face MSPs at First Minister’s Questions (FMQs) this afternoon, just hours after her “defining mission” to close the education attainment gap fell apart.

In 2016, the First Minister pledged to make “significant progress” in closing the gap by 2021 and “substantially eliminate” it within a decade. However, yesterday Scottish Education Secretary Shirley Anne Somerville said that progress had been slower than hoped, adding that she “was not going to set an arbitrary date for when the attainment gap would be closed.” She added: “Our ambition is no less than to close the attainment gap, but we do need to recognise that this is a long-term endeavour. “It will take time to deliver reductions but we are determined to see a greater pace of progress than before the pandemic.”
