The Foreign Secretary was announced as the next Prime Minister a short while ago, winning a two-month campaign against rival Rishi Sunak. But the Labour deputy leader described her speech to Conservative MPs and members as “painfully awkward and stale”.

Julia Hartley-Brewer, a conservative broadcaster and commentator, shot back: “Why don’t you pop along to liven things up by calling them all ‘Tory scum’?”
