A shopping centre Father Christmas found himself embroiled in a social media scandal when he made a little boy cry after telling him categorically that he would not be given his favourite toy this Christmas.

The boy's mum has since posted a video on Facebook of the falll-out from the tragic trip to Santa's grotto at the Harlem Irving Plaza, a suburb in Chicago, US.

The young boy tells the shopping centre Santa that he wants a Nerf gun for Christmas, but the not-so-jolly man in red replies: 'No, no guns.'

The youngster is sat across the table from the Santa when he asks for the Nerf gun, a popular foam-dart shooting toy.

When Father Christmas says no, the young boy ends up in tears.

Mum Sabello DeCarlo steps in to say that her son only meant a Nerf gun, not a real gun.

But Father Christmas stands his ground, saying: "Nope, not even a Nerf gun.

"If your dad wants to get it for you, that's fine, but I can't bring it to you."

Santa then tries to offer the boy alternative toys.

He asks: "What else would you like? Lots of other toys. Legos. There’s bicycles. There’s cars and trucks. What do you think?"

The young boy looks to his mother, then the video cuts to him sobbing as Ms DeCarlo tries to comfort her son as he cries on her shoulder.

She promises him he'll get the toy he wants for Christmas.

Ms DeCarlo claims Santa refused the toy because of his personal beliefs.

She said: "My poor baby. This was the first year Michael was excited to go see Santa.

"It was supposed to be magical but instead I had to watch my sweet little boy fight back tears because Santa told him 'No' because of his own personal beliefs.

"I had to think fast and explain to him that this Santa was just a helper and not the real guy.

"I just wanted to console my baby and get him out of there, flipping out on Santa would have only made it worse.
