The chilling moment a teenage gunman lurked outside a school before shooting 21 people dead was caught on camera.

Salvador Ramos, 18, was shot dead at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, US, following the tragic deaths of 19 children.

Police have released eerie security footage which shows Ramos skulking around the school's perimeter with the weapon he used only seconds later to massacre kids aged 10-years-old.

What sounds like gunfire can be heard going off in the video, which was shared on social media by the authorities as parents were alerted to the deadly raid.

Ramos barricaded himself inside the school and died during a shootout with border patrol officers.

At the time of the video being shared online, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District said: “There is an active shooter at Robb Elementary. Law enforcement is on site.”

Ramos shot his grandmother before going to the school and triggering an "active shooter incident".

The death toll has risen to 21 including 19 children and two adults, with one of these earlier identified as a teacher.

Speaking after the incident, Gov. Greg Abbott identified the assailant and said: "The shooter was Salvadore Romus, an 18-year-old male who resided in Uvalde.
