The Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite market index was stopped for 15-minutes at the beginning of trading. As of 1.54pm (9.54am eastern time) the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 2,075.96 points, or 8.81 percent. The S&P 500 was down 223.81 points, or 8.16 percent.
The Nasdaq Composite plummeted by 635.56 points, or 7.99 percent.
The Dow Jones measures the stock performance of 30 large companies listed on the US stock exchange.
The S&P 500 measures the stock performance of 500 large companies listed on the US stock exchange and is regarded by experts as the most importance indicator of the economy.
The Nasdaq Composite tracks more than 3,330 stocks of companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
