Elon Musk has said he will resign as Twitter CEO after losing a poll he himself set up.

The billionaire organised a poll where he asked users whether he should step down as boss and he ended up being on the losing side of it.

After stating that he would "abide by" the result of the poll, Musk stayed true to his word as he confirmed he would indeed be stepping down.

The billionaire tweeted: "I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I will just run the software & servers teams."

A total of 57.5% of more than 17million accounts that voting for him to step down as CEO.

On the other hand, 42.5% or almost 7.5million users voted in favour of keeping Musk as boss.

After setting the poll live following the poll being released, Musk did warn the public saying: "As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it."

With the result of the poll being confirmed on Monday (December 19) , the Tesla boss was nowhere to be seen on the platform.

It was only just before 11.30pm on Monday when Musk broke his silence as he tweeted: "Interesting" to a suggestion from convicted fraudster Kim Dotcom, founder of the file-sharing website Megaupload, that the poll results were affected by bot accounts.
