Melania Trump cancels major annual White House event ‘out of caution’ for coronavirus

The First Lady has remained fairly silent about the COVID-19 pandemic apart from a few tweets thanking medical professionals. Melania usually takes a quieter stance on the big issues.

However, this week FLOTUS announced the cancellation of the White House’s annual Easter Egg Roll, which would have taken place on April 13.

Melania’s office posted on The White House website: “Out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with the National Emergency Declaration concerning the COVID-19, the Office of the First Lady is announcing that this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll has been cancelled.”

She added: “The health and safety of all Americans must be the first priority, especially right now.

“I deeply regret this cancellation, but we need to make difficult decisions in the short-term to ensure a healthy country for the long-term.”

The First Lady also encouraged Americans to listen to state and local officials, and follow CDC guidelines “in order to help protect the health and well-being of everyone.”

As FLOTUS, the Easter Egg Roll has remained a highlight for Melania.

During the event, Melania arranges egg-rolling games for groups of children aged 13 and under.

She is usually pictured interacting with the children and reading them a story on the South Lawn of the White House.

They are then given different games and activities to participate in.

Last year, Melania read ‘The Wonderful Things You Will Be’ by Emily Winfield Martin.

The White House’s Easter Egg Roll is the latest major event to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Melania’s husband US President Donald Trump declared a national emergency in the US on March 13.

However, this is the first major event that Melania has publicly commented on despite there being a growing list of cancelled events.

Cancellations include multiple sports organisations, such as the NBA, NHL, and MLB.

Festivals including Coachella and Stagecoach have also postponed their events for later in the year.

SXSW (South by Southwest) has also cancelled their gatherings, while New York faces massive closures.

Melania’s latest Twitter post thanked medical staff, doctors and nurses.

She posted: “I want to take a moment to thank the medical staff, doctors, nurses & first responders who are working tirelessly to help keep our country healthy & safe.”

Melania has 13.3million followers while the post garnered an impressive 3,600 comments and 95,000 likes.
