Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was heckled by two attendants in the town hall of the 14th District of New York she represents in the US Congress over her vote to support Ukraine with further military assistance. In the middle of a town hall meeting, an attendee accused the Congresswoman and the establishment of the Democratic Party of bringing the world closer to a nuclear war by adopting another package of military aid to Ukraine in its defence against Putin’s Russia.

The heckler suddenly stood up and shouted: “Congresswoman! None of this matters unless there’s a nuclear war, in which you voted to send arms and weapons to Ukraine. Tulsi Gabbard, she’s left the Democratic Party because they are war hawks.”

The unnamed heckler went on to express regret at supporting the Congresswoman who upset expectations when she won the district election on the promise of representing her constituents and standing up to big corporations.

He said: “You ran as an outsider. Yet, you’ve been voting to start this war in Ukraine. You’re voting to start a third nuclear war with Russia and China.

“Why are you playing with the lives of American citizens? You’re playing with our lives.”

Another man stood up to shout at the Congresswoman, peddling Kremlin propaganda and bringing up Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard’s decision to leave the Democratic Party over what she called an “elitist cabal of warmongers”.

He said: “There will be no neighbours if there’s a nuclear bomb. You voted to mobilise and send money to Ukrainian Nazis. You’re a coward.

The heckler went on to question her credentials as a socialist Democrat who fights big corporations for the sake of the American people.

He asked: “You’re a progressive socialist? Where are you against the war? Mobilisation?

Referring to the other heckler, he said: “He’s telling the right truth. You have done nothing. Tulsi Gabbard has shown guts where you’ve shown cowardice.”

He continued: “I believed in you and you became the very thing you sought to fight against – that’s what you’ve become.

“You are the establishment, and you are the reason why everybody will end up in a nuclear war unless you choose to stand up right now and denounce the Democratic Party. Will you do that? Yes or no?”

Ms Ocasio-Cortez was trying to justify herself by saying “I hear you” but the man continued: “Okay, simple. Are you going to stop nuclear war? Yes or no?”

In a fiery exchange, the Congresswoman tried to explain why the US must act to preserve peace in Ukraine and defend democratic values – but the heckler appeared deaf to her justification.

The man retorted: “This is bulls**t. None of this matters if we’re all dead. None of this. You know that. Let’s take it up right now because this is the only thing that matters. This is the only thing that matters right now. We could be at a nuclear war at any minute and you continue to fund it. That’s what’s going on.”

Minor figures in the fringes of both the Democratic and Republican Parties have accused what they call the “establishment” – usually centrist politicians like Joe Biden and Liz Cheney – of upping the ante with Vladimir Putin by providing more weapons to Ukraine in its defence against Russia.

In his gravest statement to date, the US President warned the Russian leader has not been “joking” when he threatened with using nuclear, biological or chemical weapons – “because his military is, you might say, significantly underperforming”.

“For the first time since the Cuban Missile Crisis, we have a direct threat to the use of nuclear weapons, if in fact, things continue down the path they’d been going,” Mr Biden told fellow Democrats, adding: “We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis.”
