Penguins given free rein to explore aquarium after shutting doors to visitors – VIDEO

A heartwarming video of rockhopper penguins exploring an empty aquarium in the US has delighted online users. The coronavirus outbreak in the United States has led to the closure of many stores and businesses. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago may have temporarily shut down, but decided to post some good news on Twitter for those searching for it.

The video posted showed footage of two penguins walking around the empty aquarium.

The caption read: “This morning, Edward and Annie explored Shedd’s rotunda.

“They are a bonded pair of rockhopper penguins, which means they are together for nesting season.

“Springtime is nesting season for penguins at Shedd, and this year is no different!”

It continued: “Penguins like Edward and Annie will begin to build their nests next week.

“In the meantime, we will be sharing lots of different animal updates (and yes, Wellington will return!)

“While this may be a strange time for us, these days feel normal for animals at Shedd.

“Our caregivers are constantly providing new experiences for the animals to explore and express their natural behaviours with.”

The Aquarium announced their temporary closure on their website: “In the best interest of overall wellness for our community and for each other, Shedd Aquarium is temporarily closed to the public for two weeks through Sunday, March 29.

“During this period, all scheduled events and programs will be cancelled but may be rescheduled to a later date.

“While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to welcome you to the aquarium during this time, we are closing out of an abundance of caution and to do our part in the social distancing efforts to help stop the further spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19).”
