Prince Harry is "bitter and resentful" as well as "fed up with being the spare rather than the heir", according to a royal expert.

Author Angela Levin made the comments following reports from the US that the Duke of Sussex's tell-all memoir will be released later this year, amid speculation it had been pushed back.

Levin – who wrote Harry: Conversations with the Prince – reckons publishers Penguin Random House will "want a story" from the release.

Speaking to The Mail+'s royal talk show Palace Confidential, she said: "He’s now so bitter and resentful that he will say what he really feels and see things that he accepted years ago as now being really dreadful.

"I think he really wants to show his power over William because he was fed up with being the spare rather than the heir – I think he’s got a lot of poison in his blood now about what he feels about his background and his family."

Harry has previously promised to be "accurate and wholly truthful" in the autobiography.

He said: "I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become.

"I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story – the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think."

Insiders have claimed Harry is set to drop "explosive truth bombs" when it is released.

One insider that works in publishing told Page Six: "It’s juicy, that’s for sure."

Another teased: "There’s a lot of new stories in there about the past that Harry has not spoken about before, about his childhood… there is some content in there that should make his family nervous."
