Curtsying and bowing is a long-practised custom that is common throughout the Royal Family both in public and in private.
Royal fans may be surprised to know the Duchess of Cambridge is required to bow almost all blood members of the firm.
Kate Middleton is required to bow to Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie – despite being older than them and the future Queen Consort.
The Duchess of Cambridge does actually outrank both Princess Eugenie and her older sister Princess Beatrice – but she’s still beholden to the rules because she isn’t a direct descendant of the Royal Family.
When she is with her husband the Duke of Cambridge, Eugenie and Beatrice curtsy to her, as she takes on her husband’s standing.
However, when she is not with her husband, Kate is required to curtsy to all the princesses who received their titles through birth.
The same is required of Kate when she meets with any of the Queen’s four children – but she wouldn’t be required to bow to their partners.
For example, she would be required to bow to Princess Anne – but wouldn’t need to bow to Anne's husband Sir Timothy Lawrence.
When the Duchess of Cambridge eventually becomes Queen Consort, she will bow to no one – and all other royals will curtsy when they meet her.
Princess Charlotte is 'in charge' of future king Prince George, his mum admits
The news comes after Kate Middleton claims that her daughter, Princess Charlotte is the boss of her brother and future kind, Prince George.
Samantha Burge, wife of Warrant Officer Class 2 Chris Burge, told reporters: “She said that Charlotte is growing up really fast. She is the one in charge.
“We have both got 2-year-olds and they are ruling the roost. It was a bit of a mummy chat.”
