Teacher on ‘paid leave’ as he faces trial for incest and sexual assault charges

A US teacher from Grand Island, Nebraska, faces a potential life sentence after being arrested on charges of sexual assault and incest.

Philip Zlomke was taken into custody at the school shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday, said Josh Berlie, Hall County chief deputy.

“No classes were disrupted and our students and staff all remained safe,” a report from the school said.

Zlomke has been charged with two counts of first degree sexual assault related to incidents that took place in October 2021.

In that case, according to local police, the victim was an adult.

Court papers say the 40-year-old teacher is charged in a separate case with first and third degree sexual assault of a child, first degree sexual assault, and two counts of incest.

The arrest affidavit in this case has been sealed.

Zlomke was released on the two earlier charges on March 17 after posting 10% of a $200,000 bond.

Chief Deputy Josh Berlie, from the the Hall County Sheriff’s Department, stressed that the charges did not have anything to do with any students or anyone associated with the schools where Zlomke teaches.

Zlomke is a financial literacy teacher at Westridge Middle School in Grand Island.

Mitch Roush, the Director of Communications and Marketing for Grand Island Public Schools [GIPS], told reporters that Zlomke remains on paid administrative leave.

He added that GIPS is cooperating with the sheriff’s office as they conduct their investigation.

Roush went on to say that if parents have questions regarding this case, he urges them to contact the sheriff’s office.

Zlomke appeared before Judge Alfred Corey in Hall County Court where his bond was set at $200,000 with a minimum 10% payment. He has been banned from having any contact with the victim.

He has reportedly paid the bond and is currently at liberty.

According to court documents, Zlomke’s district court arraignment is scheduled for July 12 in both cases.
