Thieves ram-raid bank in Land Rover and flee with cash machine

Dramatic pictures show police surrounding a Land Rover that smashed through a bank window after thieves used it a brazen ram-raid.

Police were called to Kings Road in Chelsea, west London, in the early hours of this morning to reports of a burglary.

The suspects made off with a cash machine and fled in a white Mercedes van before officers arrived.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: “A crime scene has been put in place.

“The Met's Flying Squad has been informed. There have been no arrests. Enquiries are ongoing.”

One eyewitness tweeted: “Someone just drove a Land Rover into Metro Bank on Kings Road! And I mean right inside!”

Another said: “Car driven through the window! Shocking!”

A third account claimed: “I believe the Metro Bank in Hayes was targeted too over the weekend?”

On Friday, another Metro Bank in SouthHall, west London, was forced to close after falling victim to ram raiders.

The branch, at Hayes Bridge Retail Park, was smashed into at some time between Thursday, March 12 and Friday morning.

An eyewitness said a Range Rover was used to to break through the glass.

No customers or colleagues were at the store at the time of the incident.

A Metro Bank spokesman said: “We are aware of an incident overnight at our Southall store and we are working with the police to support their investigation.

"The store is currently closed as a result of the incident and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may cause.

"We are working as hard and fast as we can to reopen the store as soon as possible, and will be keeping our customers updated on our progress.

“We also want to reassure any customers with Safe Deposit Boxes that these remain safe and secure.”
