Nowadays, it\u2019s all about \u2018experiences\u2019 &#8211; and this one takes some beating.<\/p>\n<p>Check in to the Hotel Abi d\u2019Oru on Sardinia\u2019s swanky Costa Smeralda and you can be transformed into a mermaid.<\/p>\n<p>It was this very stretch of coast that Disney chose to film its live-action version of The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey, which premiered earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>This remake of the childhood-favourite cartoon seems to have reawakened an interest in these fantastical creatures. It all harks back to Odysseus, who was so entranced by the sirens that he lashed himself to the mast of his ship, knowing that if he was not restrained he would be unable to resist them, and would perish as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Then, of course, there was Daryl Hannah arriving naked at the Statue of Liberty in the 1984 movie, Splash.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/23\/10\/75755443-12552029-image-a-13_1695460117413.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Making a splash: Olivia Dean enjoys the &#8216;mermaid experience&#8217; offered by Hotel Abi d\u2019Oru in Sardinia<\/p>\n<p>And so, here I am, being manhandled onto a yacht by two Italian stallions, en route to Cala Moresca, a sandy beach on the northern part of the island. It\u2019s where mermaid Ariel comes ashore to her Prince Eric in the film.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, as we sped out from the hotel\u2019s marina, I was kitted out in mermaid regalia. A tail is proffered \u2014 it\u2019s somewhere between a too-tight skirt and a pillowcase \u2014 and a natty bikini top. I feel like a sausage.<\/p>\n<p>First, I am placed atop one of the rocks, so that\u2026 well, it\u2019s not entirely clear. Except that one attractions of the \u2018mermaid experience\u2019 is the wacky photo opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/25\/09\/75801963-12552029-image-a-1_1695629654941.jpg\" height=\"476\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Olivia &#8216;kitted out in mermaid regalia&#8217;. Superyachts pull up beside us, their occupants gawping, waving, laughing. A kayak instructor beckons his class to come see \u2018la ragazza\u2019. I\u2019m grateful my Italian doesn\u2019t stretch to understanding the rest of what he has to say.<\/p>\n<p>Next, it\u2019s time to road-test the tail. I\u2019m given little instruction. Includes a boat excursion to Cala Moresca. London to Cagliari flights start at \u00a376 return (easyjet.com).<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m reminded of getting my swimming badge for doing two lengths in my pyjamas aged eight, although this is rather more idyllic than a South London leisure centre. It\u2019s a good workout, too.<\/p>\n<p>Once underwater, I see shoals of sea bream following me, accustomed to scavenging breadcrumbs from the superyachts. Urchins and algae carpet the ocean floor, testament to the water\u2019s cleanliness that even the oil-belchers can\u2019t tamper with.<\/p>\n<p>Back on the yacht, over lunch, I\u2019m told that the hotel runs these tours every day, catering to any guest\u2019s wildest fantasy. My session lasts around four hours and it\u2019s not cheap \u2014 but can one put a price on this kind of dolce vita?<\/p>\n<p>The Abi d\u2019Oru attracts a chic sort of crowd. It has a private beach club, outdoor pool, spa, tennis courts, landscaped gardens and three excellent restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny nearby port village of Porto Rotondo is a joy, with quaint piazzas covered with flowers and Aperol drinkers \u2014 and not an English voice in earshot. There\u2019s stiff competition for custom along this stretch of glitzy coast.<\/p>\n<p>Luxury resorts \u2014 and their pricey cabanas \u2014 jostle for space on the beach. But Abi d\u2019Oru is the only one offering the chance to become a mermaid.
