Shocking CCTV footage shows the moment a car "exploded" in a Luton Airport car park last night, causing an inferno.

Some 1,500 vehicles were burned in the horror blaze, which broke out shortly before 9pm yesterday evening (Tuesday, October 10). Images posted to social media showed smoke billowing into the air as flames tore through the car park, the Daily Star previously reported.

Videos taken at the airport have shown the moment one car, now confirmed to be a diesel vehicle, exploded, causing flames to rip through the newly-built Terminal Car Park Two. The clips show the moment leading up to the unexpected blast, which then devoured the car.

Andrew Hopkinson, chief fire officer for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We have no intelligence at this stage to suggest that this was anything other than an accidental fire that started in one of the vehicles that had not long arrived at the airport. It was not an EV (electric vehicle). This was a diesel-powered vehicle."

Hopkinson said fire and rescue teams first received a report of the blaze at 8.47pm. Its first two appliances arrived at the scene just under 10 minutes later.
