A man who dove nude into a river and started touching himself in public after getting wasted on booze has been jailed.

Gary Ashby, 41, had wandered through the river after stripping off in a river close to the centre of Norwich. He was spotted staring at a teenage girl while completely naked near Cow Tower, Norwich Magistrates Court was told.

Families with children often paddle at the River Wensum in summer months. Ashby's nude terror took place on June 21 this year.

Police were called to the lake after members of the public noticed the man was swimming around without any clothes on. He was then seen staring in the direction of a teenage girl, at which point he began pleasuring himself.

Ashby pleaded guilty to a single charge of outraging public decency. The court heard the incident occurred while the defendant was already subject to a seven year sexual harm prevention order imposed in 2017.

Said order was in relation to a charge of viewing indecent images of children, Norwich Evening News reported. Ashby had been jailed for six months at Maidstone Magistrates Court and received a 12 month suspended sentence for possessing over 1,100 indecent child images.

District Judge David Wilson said: "A number of people who were present became very concerned about your behaviour and your intentions. This offence is a serious one and it continues a line of offending of a sexual nature on this occasion targeting a person aged under 18."

Lisa Robinson, mitigating, said: "It's fair to say he actually has no recollection of the incident due to his alcohol consumption. He does not present an unmanageable risk to the public."

Ashby has since been sentenced to a three year community order requiring him to complete 200 hours unpaid work, 20 rehabilitation days and wear an alcohol monitoring tag for six months.

A further five year sexual harm protection order has also banned him from contacting anyone aged under 18.
