The fears of a war in space have intensified after an Israeli official admitted that they are interested in buying "space weapons".

Avi Berger, the head of Israel's Space and Satellite Administration admitted that they already have the capability to shoot “electromagnetic beams” from space at any given target on Earth. Earlier this week, the Daily Star reported that Russia and the United States nearly clashed in space after a Russian satellite was spotting showing signs of “aggression” to one of its satellites.

And then it was announced that China had built a “space force” weapon to protect its satellites from any possible enemies. But it has now emerged that Israel could join a possible space war with comments made by Mr Berger.

Speaking to Israel tech website Calcalist, he said: “The world is going in that direction (of space war) and we are examining it. Whether, how or when we will make a decision or if such a decision has already been made, I am not hinting at anything.

“Unequivocally, every satellite we launch is better than the previous one. In the case of Ofek 13, it's closer to this comparison, that between an old Nokia device and a modern and up-to-date device, the upgrade is dramatic.”

Mr Berger wouldn't go into specific details about the capabilities of the country's satellites, however. But he did share enough of an insight to make other country's wanting to go ahead with a space war take notice.
