Rishi Sunak says that ‘binding requirements’ will be needed over AI

Rishi Sunak has been hit by another poll blow after the latest Techne UK tracker survey revealed the Tories are trailing 20 points behind Labour.

The civil war which has engulfed Labour over the Israel/ Gaza crisis and threatens to destroy Sir Keir Starmer’s authority as leader has only impacted the polling by one point from a week ago.

According to Techne UK, among those who have decided how to vote 46 percent would back Labour (unchanged), 26 percent the Conservatives (up 1) and 11 percent the Lib Dems (unchanged).

Reform UK are down 1 to 6 percent while the Greens are up 1 also on 6 percent.

But the continued struggles are a blow to the Prime Minister in a week where he has tried to look like a world leader with his international conference on Artificial Intelligence.

If this poll was the result of an election, the prediction website Electoral Calculus suggests the Conservatives would be reduced to their worst ever result beating the two historical lows in 1906 and 1997 with a mere 114 seats while Labour would have a majority of 274.

Worse still for the Prime Minister there are claims that some senior MPs are already putting together skeleton leadership teams in anticipation that he may be forced out or will have to quit after an election defeat next year.

One Tory MP told Express.co.uk: “The [leadership] rivals are circling. His position is far from secure.”

Among those speculated to be consdering a move should he go are Home Secretary Suella Braverman, her predecessor Priti Patel and Trade Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch on the right.

Meanwhile the left of the party is like to be behind Leader of the House Penny Mordaunt, Education Secretary Gillian Keegan or Energy Secretary Claire Couthino.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is also being touted as a compromise candidate between the two wings of the party.
