An Italian man who murdered his girlfriend over breadcrumbs being left in their bed has been released from prison due to his obesity.

Dimitri Fricano, 35, weighed 290 pounds – almost 19 stone – when he was jailed for 30 years for admitting to the killing of his girlfriend Erika Preti, 28.

But now, Fricano weighs 440 pounds, meaning the Turin Surveillance Court will release Fricano from prison on medical grounds.

Last week an Italian court ruled that the Fricano cannot stay in prison because he is “incompatible with the prison regime” due to his weight, which makes it difficult for him to get around without a wheelchair or crutches.

Judges said being incarcerated puts his life at risk as the prison cannot provide him with the low calorie diet needed to help him shed the pounds.

Doctors said Fricano is at a high risk of cardiovascular disease and requires a special diet, with the Turin Surveillance Court judges concluding, concluding Fricano “needs assistance that cannot be provided in the institution.”

The ruling has enraged the victim’s family, blasting the outcome as “shameful”.

“No one will give me back my little girl. But for us, the pain is still too strong for him to be released so soon,” Preti’s father, Fabrizio Preti, said to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

He described receiving the news as “like a stab to the heart.”
