The tyre company etyres has warned motorists to make sure their vehicle is prepared for winter or face significant fines.

With the cost-of-living crisis continuing to drive up the price of motoring, many drivers are wondering whether winter tyres are a worthwhile investment.

However, Richard Croft, Operations Director at etyres, said drivers who fit these tyres to their vehicle could save thousands.

He explained: “While winter tyres are not a legal requirement, not only is it beneficial to fit them to improve the safety of yourself and other road users, it could also save you up to £4,015 on the road.”

“Whether you choose to switch to winter tyres or not, we recommend all drivers check their winter tyre tread depth before the weather turns colder to prevent accidents. Luckily, tyres have tread wear indicators, so it is easier than ever to check your tread depth.”

The company noted that drivers must not use a vehicle with tyres that feature a tread depth under 1.6mm, else they could be fined £2,500 and given three penalty points for each affected tyre.

However, in winter months etyres recommended that motorists should make sure that their tyre depths are over 3.0mm to better grip slippery roads.

Winter tyres typically use softer rubber and feature a different kind of groove pattern which offers more grip in icy and wet conditions.

In comparison, etyres noted that summer tyres can wear out much faster during winter, losing flexibility in the colder temperatures.

As a result, these tyres can become cracked, which could lead to a puncture or even a high-speed blowout, which could be life threatening.

Worn out or cracked tyres can also put other road users at risk, often taking significantly longer to stop a vehicle.
