A popular YouTuber has revealed how he prepared his car to keep himself and other road users safe throughout the winter months.

The user @FixThisHouse regularly posts videos to his YouTube channel showing viewers how they can make improvements to their home and car.

In a popular video, the host of the channel showed motorists how a commonly found substance can help to prevent the vehicle’s doors from freezing shut at low temperatures.

He explained: “It snowed a little bit last night, so let’s see how the doors are. You can see the handles are stuck; the moisture has stuck together on the inside of the door. So, here’s a useful and very helpful tip that I want to show you, and that’s by using WD-40 silicone quick-drying spray.

“Now this spray is waterproof, protects rust and can be applied to multiple surfaces. I want you to use this on the weather stripping on your doors. Just spray a bit on a rag, apply it onto your weather stripping all the way around, and that’s pretty much it.”

In the video, @FixThisHouse sprayed some WD-40 onto a microfibre cloth and then applied a small amount of the liquid onto the rubber weather shields, found around the doors.

Whilst motorists should be careful not to get any of the WD-40 onto interior plastics, the liquid prevents moisture from building up and freezing, meaning the doors will not get stuck during the cold climate.

This trick can also be used to keep door locks from freezing, with drivers advised to apply a small amount into the lock using the thin nozzle that comes with the can.

Later in the video, @FixThisHouse recommended that all drivers carry a rubber floor mat in their car, not only to help keep it clean but in case the vehicle gets stuck.

He added: “If you ever get stuck in a ditch full of snow or anywhere, even on mud, a great tip to know is if you have floor mats on you, get one and place it underneath where your tyre is.

“The floor mats will help gain traction on top of the mat to help you out of the ditch. Now this is also a good technique, to carry a piece of plywood, so you can wedge it between your tyres, just in case you get stuck, this will act as traction.”
