Top Vladimir Putin critic and Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is missing from a prison where he was being held, according to his allies.

Prison authorities asserted that Navalny, renowned for mocking the Russian President and exposing widespread corruption, had been relocated from the penal colony where he was serving his sentence.

“Where he was taken is not known,” said Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh. She added that lawyers had not seen Navalny since December 6.

Navalny’s lawyer, Vyacheslav Gimadi, said that prison officials informed a court on Friday about Navalny’s departure from the IK-6 facility in Melekhovo, located 145 miles east of Moscow. However, there is still no knowledge of his current location.

Navalny was sentenced in August to an additional 19 years in prison, on top of the 11.5 years he was already serving.

Allies expressed their deep concern about his transfer to a “special regime” colony, the harshest grade in Russia’s prison system.

Yarmysh said: “Let me remind you that the lawyers have not seen Alexei since December 6. Why they were not allowed to meet with him, if Alexei was still in IK-6, we do not know.”

Navalny, admired by Russia’s diverse opposition, voluntarily returned to Russia in 2021 from Germany, where he had received treatment for a nerve agent poisoning. The Kremlin denied any attempt to assassinate him, dismissing the claims without evidence.

Despite being hailed by his supporters as a Russian counterpart to Nelson Mandela, destined to lead the nation once free, Navalny’s movement has faced government crackdowns.
