City with grimiest pubs in UK – with 40% of boozers deemed ‘unsanitary’

  • Food inspectors have given Peaky Blinders’ homeland Birmingham the Brum’s rush after finding its pubs and eateries are the filthiest in the UK.

Diners in Britain’s second biggest city run a more than two-in-five risk of ordering unsanitary grub. The Food Standards Agency found only 58.5% of bars, clubs, cafes, sandwich shops and takeaways reached all the hygiene standards required by law.

The worst areas in Brum for unsanitary conditions included Handsworth, Newtown, Birch-field and Washwood Heath, where only about a third fully comply with standards. FSA figures reveal Salford, Greater Manchester, is the second-grubbiest city for eating out with just 59% of venues earning five-out-of-five food safety scores.

Lincoln was the highest-ranked city for food hygiene, with a top-rated score of five.

The figures come a few weeks after the FSA's chairperson, Professor Susan Jebb, took to the stage at the Global Food Regulators Summit in New Delhi, India.

She warned that the industry needs to “innovate and evolve” or face serious consequences. She said: “Looking to the future, one of the key considerations for the FSA is our role in supporting Britain as a global trader. While the EU remains the UK’s largest supplier of imported food, supplying more than 90% of all beef, dairy, eggs and pork products imported into the UK and 65% of all food and feed not of animal origin, we need to continue building new relationships with the rest of the world.

“Health systems around the world are being compromised by diet-related ill health, especially the rise in obesity and related co-morbidities. At the same time agriculture accounts for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions.

“We need to innovate in relation to food standards, so they don’t just protect us from acute harms as a result of food borne illnesses or contaminants in our food, but that standards also protect our longer-term health and the health of our incredible planet.

“That’s going to require a whole new level of innovation and global cooperation.”
