Pub landlord wont snub Spanish beer during England final – its too popular

It's time to back England's Lionesses more than ever before as our women stand one World Cup final away from finally bringing football home.

Us Brits love a pint of Spanish lager, from Estrella to Cruzcampo and San Miguel to Madri? To be honest we're not sure where Madri's loyalties lie between the two nations so we asked them but no such luck.

This Sunday morning, though, your Daily Star calls for pubs to pour patriotically and punters to swap their favourite premium tipple for something that'll send the St George's flag waving in the wind.

We put our cheeky suggestion for a matchday boycott of Spain's best beers to an East End boozer in London's Isle of Dogs but it didn't go to plan.

The Greenwich Pensioner doesn't have your typical line up of lagers with the likes of a proud English Carling no where to be found. Instead the swanky pub offers an array of local craft beers as an alternative to the Spanish behemoth that is San Miguel.

That meant I was in luck given my love for everything that comes out of Signature Brew towers in Blackhorse Road.

When we asked pub boss Tony, 39, what he made of banning the 5% premium lager from sunnier shores, he scoffed it wouldn't do them much favours behind the counter.

He told us of San Miguel: "It's our most popular, got to be honest. Second is Rewind which is brewed in London so that's a good thing, east London but yeah San Miguel is our most popular one.

"It would be a huge sacrifice only considering we a small independent business and as much as I would love to do that and spur people in the direction of an English lager, we can't afford to.

"We'll see how it goes, I hope they are patriotic. I mean it's a big event and we're doing well."

Putting my money or rather our money at the Daily Star where our mouth is, I forked out six fine English pounds on the Rewind lager from Signature Brew.

The Poplar-based boozer wasn't the only team in the industry we called on to have customers snubbing the nectar of our World Cup rivals this weekend.

Wetherspoon refused to comment and pub chain Greene King also had nothing to say on the matter, despite the latter showing their support for the Lionesses in numerous other ways over the course of the tournament.

If fans rock up to a participating Greene King on Sunday morning, wearing either the England kit, England colours or England face paint, they’ll receive a free drink to enjoy during the game.

The free drink can be chosen from a wide selection of cask ales, lagers, craft beers, wines, spirits, and mixers, but you don't need reminding of what to avoid just this once.

On Friday, Conservative MP Sir Michael Fabricant asked police to "turn a blind eye" to any pubs opening early for Sunday's World Cup final.

He wrote to Staffordshire Police Chief Constable Chris Noble and Ben Adams, police and fire commissioner for Staffordshire, to make the request.

He wrote: "As you know, the Women's World Cup Final will be held at 11am (BST) on Sunday. I think it would be a marvellous gesture if pubs could be allowed to open early and, although this would be contrary to the law, the police might turn a blind eye on this one occasion only."

Sir Michael said in a statement: "With Parliament in recess and so many MPs abroad, licensing laws cannot be changed in time to allow pubs to open early for Sunday.

"I think now is the time for the police to show discretion to allow pubs and other venues to open early allowing people to cheer on our wonderful Lionesses in the company of others. I hope other police forces might show similar flexibility too – on this particular Sunday.

"When Parliament returns, I shall discuss with ministers whether the law can be changed to allow for Home Office ministers to change licensing hours for special occasions without it needing legislation in Parliament each time."
