Putin sending migrants to European country as neighbours rush to close borders

Estonia is pointing fingers at Russia, claiming that Vladimir Putin is intentionally directing migrants toward its border.

It comes after Finland decided to close most of its border crossings with Russia.

Finland alleges that Russian guards are actively encouraging people from countries like Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Syria to try to cross into Finland.

Russia denies Finland’s claims, and there’s been no official response to Estonia’s similar accusations.

Finland’s Prime Minister, Petteri Orpo, recently announced the closure of four border crossings, stating that Russia is assisting undocumented individuals trying to reach the border. Finland is now closing all border crossings except one in the north.

The shared border between Finland and Russia is 1,340 kilometres (833 miles) long.

Finnish officials suspect Russian involvement in over 600 asylum-seekers arriving in Finland over the past two weeks.

Estonia has also witnessed a rise in attempted border crossings.

Estonia’s public broadcaster reported that 75 migrants tried to enter from Russia, but none sought asylum, and all were turned away.

The country is preparing to close border crossings if the migrant pressure from Russia increases.

Officials express concern about migrants arriving in small, organised groups, suggesting a coordinated effort.
