Labour chaos minutes before Rayner’s conference speech as member storms stage

Delegate ejected minutes before speech at Labour conference

The Labour conference was plunged into disarray minutes before Angela Rayner’s speech today as a delegate stormed the main stage.

The man attempted to address the packed audience from the lectern but the microphone was not switched off.

He was then bundled off the stage by two members of the security team.

Some members could be heard booing while others slowly clapped as he was removed.

The chaotic moment came shortly before the deputy Labour leader gave her speech as the conference opened in Liverpool.

It comes as activists have gathered for what could be the final Labour conference before the election expected next year.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer told Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to “bring it on” as the event got underway.

In an eve-of-conference reception for London Labour members, Sir Keir said: “I say to Rishi Sunak: if he wants change, bring it on.”

He told the crowd: “I don’t agree with Rishi Sunak on very much, but when he stood up last week and said we’ve had years of failure and we need a change, I thought he was spot on.

“We need change. He can’t be that change, he’s been the nodding dog as chancellor nodding through all the decisions he now says were so terrible they’ve got to change them.”
