First Brit could walk on surface of the Moon as early as 2025 in historic event

A Brit astronaut could walk on the moon in a matter of months and even tred on Mars in the next decade, NASA reportedly told the British Government.

Michelle Donelan, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology of the United Kingdom, was visiting NASA HQ in Florida, USA, earlier this week when she grilled them on the possibility of a Brit on the moon.

She asked specifically about the Artemis III mission, the first American crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in December 1972, and was reportedly told that it was "incredibly possibe" someone on board could represent the UK.

The Secretary of State told the Telegraph after her visit: "I asked NASA, in relation to the Artemis programme, what was the feasibility around the Artemis 3 mission, and they said it was incredibly possible.

"We have one of the most innovative space sectors in the world, and we have some fantastic talents, homegrown. Look at Tim Peake.

"The second Artemis mission will be going around the moon, and then the third one will go on the moon. So arguably the one to be in is the third one."

Mail Online reported that Ms Donelan even suggested that UK astronauts should be involved in the first missions to Mars, slated for the next decade.

Only 12 people have ever walked on the moon's surface, and all have been from the US and a part of NASA's Apollo space programme.

Tim Peake, the first Brit astronaut to go into the International Space Station, has designs on walking on the lunar surface in his lifetime.

Brits Rosemary Coogan, Meganne Christian and John McFall could also be in contention after joining the European Space Agency last year.
