Man fighting for life after horror Audi smash with city centre cordoned off

A man is fighting for his life after a horror crash involving an Audi has closed a huge part of a major UK city.

Police rushed to the scene in Liverpool in the early hours of this morning (Saturday, October 7), before cordoning off a huge section of the waterfront.

A white Audi TT travelling at speed came to the attention of police on patrol at around 1.10am before it crashed into a taxi on the Strand near the junction with Brunswick Street.

Merseyside Police said the taxi then crashed into a pedestrian, a man in his 40s, who was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. His condition is described as critical, Liverpool Echo reports.

The taxi driver, a man in his 50s, also required treatment for neck injuries.

A manhunt is underway for the Audi driver, who police said ran off on foot following the crash, while a passenger was detained at the scene.

A 53-year-old woman from Southport was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and has been taken into custody for questioning.

Horrific pictures show a car inside the cordon with the roof cut off and the back of the vehicle crumpled next to it.

The Audi has also been pictured with what appears to be extensive damage.

The Strand is closed in both directions between James Street and Chapel Street while officers continue to work at the scene. These road closures may affect other areas of the city centre and drivers are advised to find alternative routes.

The Audi and the private hire taxi can be seen inside the cordon with extensive damage. Car parts are scattered across the road and yellow evidence markers have been placed beside them.

People living in a block of flats inside the cordon have been told they can’t leave their homes due to the police scene.

Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, lead investigating officer for the MATRIX serious collision investigation unit said, “An investigation has been launched following this collision, which has left a 44-year-old man with serious injuries.

“While an arrest has been made in connection with the incident, the investigation is still very much in its early stages and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident to please get in touch.

“I would ask that if you were in the area at the time or have premises nearby, to please review your CCTV or dashcam in case the incident was captured, including any footage of the Audi TT shortly before the incident.
