A Catholic priest who fled the United States to Italy with a schoolgirl he’d spent months grooming has married her.

Alex Crow, 30, did a runner to Rome from Alabama back in July, leading to a massive manhunt. Cops investigating the couple’s disappearance found a bunch of letters that they’d written to each other.

They’ve since returned to the US – and now they’ve got hitched, according to a marriage certificate filed on Monday.

When the pair returned to America, the archdiocese of Mobile said it was “relieved”. In a statement, it said: “While Crow’s behaviour has been scandalous, the archdiocese does not have any information to indicate that Crow has committed any crime.”

And investigators said they wouldn’t be pressing charges over his sordid actions after the woman – who appears to have turned 18 in July – attended a meeting accompanied by her lawyer and declined to answer any questions.

Archbishop Thomas J Rodi announced when Crow left that he’d suspended the priest and forbidden him from acting, dressing or presenting himself as a priest.

Following the latest twist in the story, a fresh statement from the archdiocese said: “The recent news of Crow's civil marriage only confirms the Archbishop's judgment. Archbishop Rodi anticipates that the Vatican will eventually laicise Alex Crow.”

The woman is a recent graduate of McGill-Toolen High School. Crow was not an employee there but sometimes visited.

The letters unearthed by the detectives investigating their disappearance included aaaa Valentine's Day love note to the girl from Crow. He wrote: “You are mine – no one else’s, and I will always be a father to you until I die.”

He added: “I’m sorry I cannot give you a ‘normal’ Valentine’s Day this year. I wanted to do nothing more than buy you flowers but for fear of scandal I couldn’t.”
