The beautiful European city with beaches so pretty its St Tropez on a budget

A beautiful city on the Turkish coast has been labelled a “destination dupe” for St Tropez.

Bodrum featured on EuroNews’ list of places to go to avoid the crowds, with “dupe” locations that are just as good as the real thing.

The city offers “sea, sand and glam on a budget”, being much cheaper than the popular spot on the Cote d’Azur.

Bodrum is on the west coast of Turkey and is a port city at the entrance to the Gulf of Gokova with a population of 190,000.

Much like St Tropez, it is lined with holiday resorts for all budgets and has a coastline of sandy beaches and clear blue waters.

Bodrum has a long history and is home to the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Visitors can enjoy the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, the 15th-century Castle of St Peter, boat trips along the coast, the Old Town, the historic amphitheatre and the Bodrum windmills.

There are also a number of restaurants offering traditional Bodrum cuisine with dishes such as stuffed pumpkin flower, purslane salad and octopus stew.

Among the top beaches and bays lining the coast are Bitez, Ortakent, Gumbet and Karaincir. The more popular are often visited by cruise passengers so can get crowded.

Bodrum can be visited by plane with flights leaving from London, Edinburgh and Bristol.

Other places that are considered “destination dupes” are Girona instead of Barcelona, Treviso instead of Venice and Procida instead of Capri.
