US issues tsunami warning after 7.3 magnitude earthquake hits in Pacific Ocean

The US has issued a Tsunami warning after a huge earthquake rocked the Vanuatu Islands earlier today.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 crashed into the Vanuatu Islands at 12.57pm UTC.

The US Tsunami Warning Centers has now warned that based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, “hazardous tsunami waves” are possible within 300km of the epicenter along the coasts of Vanuatu and New Caldeonia.

It said: “An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 occurred in the Vanuatu Islands at 1257 UTC on Thursday, December 7, 2023.

“Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300km of the earthquake epicenter.”
