Hurricane havoc as autumns first storm unleashes 60mph gales, rain and floods

Britain will be walloped by a hurricane tomorrow, as autumn’s first storm brings 60mph gales, an inch of rain and floods.

Forecasters have warned howling hinds from ex-Hurricane Lee will roar across the Atlantic from Canada, causing chaos tomorrow night (Tuesday, September 19) and Wednesday.

Gusts of 30 to 50mph are set to buffet many parts, with some regions of the northwest set for 60mph locally.

It comes as the Environment Agency issued flood warnings after some areas were bombarded with half a month’s rain in the space of an hour.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms was installed, with rain forecast for up to a 13-day stretch in parts.

Met Office forecaster Ellie Glaisyer said: “Hurricane Lee affected Canada and by the time it reaches us it will be an ex-tropical storm.

“It is tracking across the Atlantic towards the UK, arriving on Tuesday night.

“It is expected to bring heavy rain and winds gusts up to an isolated 60mph in northwest Scotland, with 30 to 40mph and possibly 50mph elsewhere. The strongest winds are likely to be on coasts.

“The western side of the UK will receive the heaviest rainfall.

“Low pressure will be in charge this week, with much fresher conditions in a marked change from recent warm weather.”

Travel plans were expected to be affected in the worst-hit areas.

Heavy rain brought “torrential downpours” across south-west England yesterday, with localised flooding in south Devon.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “Local flooding is possible from rivers and surface water across parts of the southwest and north on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Properties may flood and there may be travel disruption.”
